Techies & God
With the advent of the technology that we have grown so accustomed to in our daily life things are getting easier for us to understand.
The problem
God, who lives in the spirit realm has always had this brain gap that exists on our side to even get a hint of His magnificence and His amazing universe.
A lot of what he said in the bible has fallen on ignorance and deaf ears for thousands of years. Some saints along the way just took him at his word and did things anyway, but even they hit the wall on some issues.
We are attempting to understand and comprehend a God who is mostly invisible to us. Our five senses in these bodies are useless to find him. We can send probes into outer space, but don’t know His address! So we have had to rely mostly on other men who have had some otherworldly experience to even know that He is real.
When His son Jesus was on the planet, he emerged for a short time and revealed the father in ways that could be seen, heard and touched. Still he had to rely on parables that the people of that time could get hold of to get a little tiny tip of the iceberg exposed. The 12 disciples captured all they could and that became books telling of all that they could “catch”.
The fix
But today, we techies have things that have never been available to any of the generations before our time. We should have it made! We sit in a movie that has placed on a huge screen in front of us in vivid detail the inside of a spacecraft that has never been built. We see creatures warring against man that have never existed. We can pull a tiny box out of our pocket and talk to someone we can’t see that is thousands of miles from us. We can even see them if we need to, and send written messages while we are talking!
Techies can type a word in a machine and if it is incorrect, it will talk back to us in print or voice and tell us we have just entered the wrong password! High School kids carry around calculators that have hundreds of times more power than the largest computers of just 30 years ago. Techies can insert a disk into a machine that has more knowledge than the libraries of the previous centuries. These are just the common things, not the high-tech fringes of our world.
“Software” in techies machines can determine if the computer on our desk is a word processor on a game station or a bottle-capper on an assembly line! The brain in our laptops is more powerful than the brain that ran the entire telephone system for a thousand offices just twenty years ago.
So what Jerry?
What this offers us are brains that are crammed full of high-tech parables for everything in the text that God has provided us:
People of my youth said “sticks & stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt me”. Now we know better and we know why. Jesus tried to tell us that just a word could change the physical around us. He told us to speak to trees and tell them to move. He told weather what to do. He spent hours inserting new software into young men so that they could change the world. They did. That is why your calendar is marked “2000 something” Blind eyes opened at his word, dead were raised and the lame walked.
Recently, movies have shown us techies a world that was made of an invisible “matrix” with characters who live in a virtual reality warring with the human super-heroes who are trying to save the whole race. They are good parables for us who have chosen to follow Jesus. Because we are actually living in a planet that is a virtual reality with characters made of dirt that have taken on human form warring against an invisible enemy.
People tell me that they have a hard time with believing in an enemy who they can’t see that God told us about in his book. This fallen angel of the highest order has become a gruesome challenger to us who has hoards of assistants that roam the planet hidden from our eyes. Even Saint Paul told us that we were not warring against each other, but these evil hoards in the unseen realm.
Movies have portrayed parallel universes and invisible barriers that exactly replicate our battle against this enemy that our eyes don’t usually see. Techies can easily visualize this one…where my dad had a problem what anything that didn’t walk like a duck.
Just the notion of software can give techies a hot illustration on why what we think can change our life. Change the software, change the life. Speak different words, get a different result!
God tried to tell us that this world and the surrounding planets were created with just words from his mouth. He said he framed the whole universe this way. So could it be if we are made in his image that we are doing the same thing all the time?
God tried to tell us that he had the hair on your head numbered…but we couldn’t imagine even what a database was, much less one that big! Yet he tells us that he cares about even the sparrows and your smallest need. We can believe in Obi-wan over there somewhere in the force, why not the Holy Spirit doing the same job?
Our movies have shown us how time travel looks. To God, he time travels all the time- because he lives outside of time. We keep looking at our watch, but he doesn’t even have one. He keeps telling us that we are going to live forever…and we go- how?! To the one who lives in the forever zone for him it is how not? Techies only have a problem with that until they see another Sci-fi where spirits are coming in and out of people’s bodies. The idea of spirits should make us feel a little more at home when we realize that we actually are spirits! Most of us think that we are these dirt bags we run around in. Or we think that we are these toy brains the creator gave us…uh, uh, Charlie, we are spirits who have a soul (mind, will, emotions) that live in this body (dirt bag).
Today, we look at re-runs of Star Trek and watch their medical devices magically restore damaged bodies brought back on board. But that is being done today already because science has made the cross-over to the elemental level below atomic particles. In 20 minutes we can look at 800 areas of my marvelous trillions of cells and diagnose my top 20 things to fix…and begin the fix by replicating just what my body needs!
But you know what we usually do with this amazing technological advance? We get pumped up with pride over man’s puny achievements like we do when our city’s NFL team wins the Super bowl: we think that because we live here, we strut around like we threw the winning touchdown!
Go back and read what He said in his letters to us. Throw away your old religious baloney about God and let him show you the entire universe!
